Depresión
La depresión es un estado de salud mental que se caracteriza por la pérdida de interés en las actividades cotidianas de la vida de una persona. Puede ser causada por diversos factores, genéticos, cambios hormonales, ciertas enfermedades médicas, estrés, duelo o circunstancias vitales estresantes que también pueden contribuir al desarrollo o mantenimiento de la depresión.
Los síntomas incluyen:
Estado de ánimo irritable o bajo la mayoría de las veces
Dificultad para conciliar el sueño o exceso de sueño
Cambio grande en el apetito, a menudo con aumento o pérdida de peso
Cansancio y falta de energía
Sentimientos de inutilidad, odio a sí mismo y culpa
Dificultad para concentrarse
Movimientos lentos o rápidos
Inactividad y retraimiento de las actividades usuales
Sentimientos de desesperanza o abandono
Pensamientos repetitivos de muerte o suicidio
Pérdida de placer en actividades que suelen hacerlo feliz, incluso la actividad sexual
Igualmente, los niños pueden llegar a presentar síntomas de depresión. Algunos de los síntomas en los niños pueden ser apatía, irritabilidad y tristeza persistente.

Es determinante para lograr combatirla. Y aunque es un problema de salud mental muchas veces ignorado, negado o no identificado adecuadamente, cada día se deben poner mayores esfuerzos en su tratamiento.
Ya que la prevalencia de este padecimiento es del 11 por ciento en la población mexicana. Eso significa que más de 12 millones de personas la padecen. Es un problema que se presenta cada vez a edades más tempranas, y debido a la falta de diagnóstico y tratamiento se ha visto un aumento de los suicidios en México.
Aunque aún falta mucho por investigar sobre este padecimiento, hay indicios de que si algún familiar directo ha tenido o tiene depresión, puede aumentar el riesgo para que otros integrantes de la familia la padezcan.
No se conoce un patrón específico para su aparición, pero sí se ha visto en familias de deprimidos que hay genes asociados. No quiere decir que el padre la va a heredar al hijo forzosamente, pero hay estudios que dicen que cuando uno de los padres está afectado, el 25 por ciento de la descendencia puede tener riesgo de presentar depresión. Uno de los asuntos más complicados cuando de depresión se trata, es lograr identificarla.
¿Cómo prevenirla?
No es posible prevenirla, pero hay estrategias que ayudan a disminuir su prevalencia,
tales como:
Recibir un tratamiento adecuado
Dormir al menos ocho horas diarias
Poner atención en la alimentación. Evitar ayunos
Hacer actividad física
No consumir alcohol ni otras drogas
